I spent some time over the weekend polishing Burners! Jetbike Racing in the 25th Century. After a several month break from writing to attend to personal matters I was able to read the rules again objectively. I think they are very close to a playable format.
I worked on combat rules this weekend. Combat is strictly forbidden by the governing body over jet bike racing – very much like fighting is forbidden by Major League Hockey. So you have to be just a bit sneaky to get your hits in.
The damage system seems to work pretty well, and keeps the game moving nicely. We also added pit-bots to repair your racer’s even while you are moving so you can stay in the race at all times.
Plus, in a nod to Mario Kart, the slowest bike on any given turn draws the turn encounter card, which will usually help him level the playing field a bit and keep the race tight.
I am also working on 3 race ‘scenarios’ to help you build your own tracks and race specific rules. I am about to commission the cover art and interior sketches for the book and will target January 1, 2015 as a release date!
